Infertility Study Confirms Laser Acupuncture Improves IVF Pregnancy Rates
Numerous research studies have shown positive results when using acupuncture as an adjunct treatment with IVF. A recent research study using laser acupuncture immediately before and after embryo transfer (either with IVF, ICSI, or FET), shows laser acupuncture increases implantation by up to 15% over traditional acupuncture.
Acupuncture was first shown in a German research study by Paulus in 2002 to increase pregnancy rates when performed 25 minutes before and 20 minutes after embryo transfer. Since then, thousands of couples have successfully incorporated this protocol into their IVF program. Last year, Dr. Paul Magarelli and Dr. Diane Cridennda published their study in Fertility and Sterility Journal Dec 2009, which is a combination of the Paulus protocol and a 1996 protocol by Elizabeth Stener-Victoran. The results show not only that acupuncture is successfully combined with IVF, but how acupuncture works by normalizing two important stress hormones that are suppressed during the down regulation phase of IVF. Leading to higher rates of pregnancy, fewer miscarriages, fewer multiples and most importantly more take home babies. They also discovered the length of time and minimum amount of treatments required to achieve normalization of the two stress hormones being an important factor. These two exciting studies also show us, we’re on the right track combining Chinese Medicine and western medicine in IVF embryo transfers when using “specified acupuncture protocols”. These research tested protocols are based on many years and thousands of patients showing positive outcomes in pregnancy rates, which is why they are incorporated into the IVF Support program.
