Acute Injury & Chronic Pain
The following modalities are used either alone or in combination for the treatment of pain:
Acupuncture, Chinese herbs and liniments, Laser acupuncture known as Low Level Light Therapy, electro stimulation, TDP lamp (a form of heat therapy), cupping, gua sha (scrapping technique) and massage. These treatments are safe and effective ways to speed the healing process, have no harmful side effects and normally found to be quite soothing. They increase local circulation, reducing swelling and inflammation as well as stimulate neural pathways.
In Chinese Medicine, pain is mainly viewed as an obstruction of the flow of qi (pronounced chee), which is the natural energy that flows through the body and it effects normal body functions. Qi can be blocked from many things such as an injury, an accident, stress, over use and even lack of movement. Another possibility is that the qi isn’t strong enough to circulate. Once evaluated by the practitioner, the blockage of qi can be removed or nourishment brought to the area through acupuncture alone, or in combination with any of the above modalities. The amount of time it takes to relieve the pain will depend on the severity of the imbalance and it’s root cause. Everybody is different so each treatment is customized to meet your specific needs.
Acute injuries are best treated every other day for the first 1-3 weeks depending on the severity of the injury. Once the pain has diminished and the swelling reduced, treatments can be spaced further apart until the problem is resolved.
Chronic pain should be treated twice a week for the first one or two weeks and then reduced to once a week for a month and then re-evaluated for a maintenance plan to be set.
